The
Island's
unique location offers the best of two worlds. The easy going, laid
back island life style, known as living on "Island Time", yet only
located minutes from one of the bigger cities in the state of Texas,
Corpus Christi. Known as the Sparkling City by the Sea, Corpus has
much to offer. The city has stood the test of time, enduring the
hurricanes of the early 1900's and the oil crunch in the mid 1980's.
The city still stands tall over looking the Corpus Christi
Bay. Home to one of the major ports in the U.S. the Port of
Corpus Christi is a working port. Receiving oil tankers, cargo
vessels, and many other types of ships from all over the world. A
newly renovated world class marina located down town allows
travelers to visit Corpus Christi via the Gulf of Mexico by yacht,
or by sailboat. Restaurants, nightclubs, great shopping can all be
enjoyed only minutes from your Island Paradise. |

The newly
developed Whataburger Field complex (pictured to the left), is home to the Corpus
Christi Hooks minor league baseball team. The Hooks are a part of
the Houston Astro Major League franchise, and you can bet the guys
playing on the Hooks here in Corpus, are being watched by their
counterparts the Houston Astros. For more info on the Hooks, check
out their web site
HERE. Corpus Christi is also
the hometown to one of the most successful burger franchise
companies in the world, Whataburger. Whataburger opened its first
hamburger stand in 1950, and Harmon Dobson the founder of
Whataburger,
proudly
sold fries a drink and a huge Texas sized burger all for under 50
cents.
Among one of the popular tourist destinations in Corpus Christi is
the USS
Lexington, also know as the Lady Lex, or the Grey Ghost. With a
length of 910ft, and 147ft across the middle, this ship was
home to 2,600
sailors during World War II. Now the Lexington is anchored in the
Corpus Christi Bay, and is used as a floating museum. For much more
information on the Lexington, check out their web site, it's packed
with great triva, and history about the USS Lexington.

Another
popular destination in Corpus is the Texas State Aquarium (left).
This world
class Aquarium is host to thousands of fish, fowl, and other
wildlife from our area. Built right on the Corpus Christi Bay, it
naturally blends into it's surroundings. From spectacular Dolphin
shows in the newly completed Dolphin Bay, to the tiny sea creatures
that walk the bottom of the ocean. This place is entertainment from
the minute you walk through the waterfall entrance, to the minute
you leave. For more information check out their web
site.

Island Facts:
Padre Island, is a long sand-barrier island extending some
130 miles along the coast of South Texas, and has the longest sand
beach in the United States. Nowhere is the island more than three
miles wide.
Padre Island is a biological wonder with more than 600 species of
plants and wildflowers. A unique species of oily live oak tree (Quercus
fusiformis) grows only on the island. Blacktail jackrabbits,
ground squirrels, coyotes, and eastern moles are among the many
animals on Padre. The Laguna Madre is noted for its great fishing
and its astronomical number of waterfowl. Herons, ibis, egrets,
spoonbills, pelicans, cormorants, ducks, and geese use the island
and the lagoons as a sanctuary and breeding ground. In 1991 the
island was divided into three distinct areas: north, central, and
south. The north is devoted to residential, water-oriented,
recreational development. In 1962 the central portion became Padre
Island National Seashore, which is in its natural state except at Malaquite Beach. The south part has been developing rapidly since
the 1970s as a resort area; the town of South Padre Island was
incorporated in 1973."The Sigsbee Deep", the deepest part of the Gulf of Mexico, is situated off the central
part of the island. It is an abyss 300 miles long, 100 miles wide,
and 12,000 feet deep. More than 272 varieties of saltwater fish have
been identified in the Sigsbee Deep, a favorite site for saltwater
fishermen.

Packery Channel:
The long awaited
Packery Channel is now open. Boaters and fisherman alike are
enjoying the conveniences of having the Gulf of Mexico at their back
door. The channel was originally opened in the 1930's but with time
and hurricanes over the years it naturally closed from sand and silt
washed in by storms. Finally in October of 2006 it was officially
re-opened for all to use. The impact of fresh Gulf waters entering
our back bays, and waterways has given new new life to our fishing,
and the boating activities that the community on north padre has
come to enjoy as Island residents.
